TANZ was established in 2017 as the only recognized national trade association for the New Zealand tile industry.

TANZ work with many of the major product suppliers, manufacturers and installers to help with education and training and to promote best practice. TANZ communicated with BRANZ about technical matters that had a direct impact with the New Zealand tile industry and by means of research, we communicated many of our findings. This lead to a healthy robust relationship with BRANZ as often our research leant on the BRANZ Good Practice Guide : Tiling publication.

In early 2023 TANZ reached out to BRANZ and asked if we could assist with updating the BRANZ Good Practice Guide : Tiling, so as to reflect the updates to the standards AS3740, AS3958 and the IWAM Code of Practice E3/AS2. As BRANZ is very busy with other construction matters, on the 3rd of March 2023 it was a privilege to have BRANZ pass on all copy rights of the publication to TANZ, as the new custodians of the BRANZ guide.

In early 2024 TANZ organised for a working group that included the WMAI and BCITO to update the BRANZ publication, this was fund by BCTF, who later became CGF. The collaborative approach demonstrated construction trade support, to produce the updates to the BRANZ publication. The updated publication was then sent to MBIE for review.

On the 14th of February 2025 the TANZ Best Practice Guide Tiling and Wet Area Construction was endorsed by MBIE as the “best practice guide”

This publication is the only MBIE endorsed “best practice guide” for the New Zealand Tile industry. The guide leverages off BRANZ excellent history in New Zealand and provides information that looks beyond tiles, but considers in great detail building elements and waterproofing of internal wet areas. From this publication the TANZ TEAM training program has been formed and now allows for education to support the soon-to-be, new LBP license category for internal membrane application and surface coverings.

The TANZ Best Practice Guide Tiling and Wet Area Construction sets the standards and is the main resource that guides New Zealand Tile industry.
